Using A Microwave to Fuse Your Dichroic Glass

July 12th, 2011 Filed under: Glass by arnasati

by CalyxAnn

To begin, you’re going to need a few items. Here is a list of what you’ll want to have on hand.

Surface & Embellishments:

Clear dichroic glass scrap pieces
Black silk cord

Tools & Supplies:

Kiln
Kiln paper
Dry-wheeled glass cutter
Runner pliers
Hot mitts
Wheeled nipper
Microwave oven

Okay, here’s what you’re going to want to do.

Trace and cut out the pattern onto a page. Place the pattern under a sheet of clear glass, lining up edge of pattern with glass. use the nippers to cut little pieces of dichroic scrap to cover base heart.
Use the glass cutter to cut along dotted line of pattern, and the running piers to break out glass pieces. Cut two of each pattern piece. (Tip: Glass may have rough edges, which will disappear after fusing.) Use lint-free damp cloth to clean glass. Fit each of the pieces for base of heart.
Use the glass cutter or wheeled glass nipper to cut little random-sized pieces of dichroic scraps.
Place clear glass on kiln paper in shape of heart as shown in diagram. Start fitting dichroic scrap bits and pieces on top of the clear piece until it is completely covered. (Tip: Try using a different base glass such as white, black or red.)
Carefully set kiln base with glass inside microwave. Cover base and glass with kiln lid.
Refer to the chart below for fusing times. (Tip: All microwave and kiln combinations have different firing patterns. Take careful notes and log all fusing times for future use.)
After time is up, open microwave and use hot mitts to carefully life lid enough to inspect fusing process. Fuse longer, in 15 second intervals, until desired results are achieved. Use hot mitts to remove kiln from microwave and place on a heat-resistant surface. Let cool for at least 30 minutes with lid on. (Tip: Removing lid or peeking under lid during cooling process will cause glass to crack. Glass remains hot for a long time and should be handled with great caution.)
Thread both cord ends through the heart shape and tie slip knot around it. Knot both ends.

Dichroic glass art design tip from professional craftsperson.

Dichroic glass may darken or loose its color if over fired. To prevent this, reduce power of microwaves exceeding 800 watts. For example, if fusing in a 1200 watt microwave, reduce power to 70% for first firing of 2 minutes. When finished, open microwave, and use hot mitts to carefully lift kiln lid enough to inspect fusing process. By doing so, you will release some heat from chamber, resulting in a reduction of temperature inside kiln. Return lid to base and continue with second firing at 100% or full power.

Watts Minutes Thickness of Glass 800 3 to 4 1/4″ (2 3/8″ pieces) 1100 2 at 70% + 1 1/2 at 100% 1/4″ (2 3/8″ pieces) 1200 2 at 70% + 1 1/2 at 100% 1/4″ (2 3/8″ pieces)

Using Scrap Dichroic Glass to Make Donut Shape Pendants

July 12th, 2011 Filed under: Glass by arnasati
dichroic glass
by Wendy Tanner

Article by Linda Kinyo

This is a beginner’s guide to making some-what simplistic donut shaped pieces of dichroic glass. The shape and size of the donut made is ideal for making pendants and necklaces, but could be sized differently using the same method for smaller items, such as for earrings.

For those who don’t know, making a fused dichroic donut pendant is a great way to use up the leftover scrap pieces of dichroic and other pieces of glass.

Anyone can create these necklace pendants from a ton of different types of scrap glass. There isn’t really a template for this type of design; it is very much left up to whatever you come up with.

Most will notice from looking at photos, start with a solid color, such as green for fusing the base, from which you can go ahead and place dichroic pieces laid on top. Choose your colors carefully as these two pieces will then fuse together.

Try laying out the base using different angles to accomplish making a variety of different shapes. You can use different shapes of dichroic glass as themes for future designs.

Keep in mind that you don’t always have to use dichroic. Artists can use many types of small pieces of fusible glass, just keep the COE in mind.

Once you made all of your cuts and laid the glass out in your design, make sure everything is cleaned and dried properly. Next step is to load it onto a primed kiln shelf, keep in mind you can use shelf paper instead.

Put the shelf into the kiln and allow your kiln to vent; if using shelf paper, gradually bring the temperature up to around 1000 F until the binders have burnt off.

Close the vent, take the temperature up to around 1450 to 1550 F. Wearing your dark kiln safety glasses check the fusing process to ensure the glass doesn’t over fire.

Once you are happy with the fusing process, turn the kiln off and allow it to cool down to room temperature.

The pendant can be finished off by gluing a bail to the back of it or use a leather thong to suspend the pendant around your neck.

Experiment with colored fusing glass and fuse different designs, the combinations and shapes are virtually endless.

Guidelines for Using a Petrol Chainsaw

June 25th, 2011 Filed under: Sharpener by arnasati

Like in any case, technology was invented to make life easier for people. Especially in todays hectic and fast moving lifestyle we want things that give us convenience.  This is also in the case of inventing petrol chainsaws. But before we talk about petrol chainsaws, let us first delve into the aspects of what a chainsaw is all about.

A chainsaw is a mechanical saw which can be hand carried in order to cut across logs or wood structures. One may be powered by hydraulics, electricity or compressed air. The most common type is powered by a two-stroke engine called petrol chainsaws. Usually used by tree surgeons for cutting tree limbs, pruning, bucking and felling of trees as well as removing branches and foliage. It is also used for suppression in case of forest fires and for harvesting firewood.

The following parts of a petrol chainsaw are:

An electric motor of about 30 – 120 cm3 cylinder volume.

A sprocket and centrifugal clutch utilized as a driving mechanism.

A guide bar which is a long bar with measurements of 16 to 36 inches with a circular end made of alloy steel that can withstand wear and tear.

A cutting chain similar to that of a bicycle chain but without rollers with each segment having a small edgy blade called teeth.

A drive link allows for the lubrication of the oil around the bar.

Based on the following parts, it can be deemed that a petrol chainsaw is a very powerful tool. It can cut through trees and hard wood. So there are certain things that a tree surgeon or anyone using a chainsaw can exercise. Such necessary caution includes the following:

Reading the manual in case you buy it for the first time.

Sharpening it before use. It is because if the petrol chainsaw is dull it will need extra effort to cut through wood or could injure people.

Wearing gloves in case you are sharpening the edges to reduce cutting yourself because of the sharp edges.

Tighten the chain for about 1/32 of a single inch’s measurement away from the so-called bar rails and bar span.

Pumping chain oiler to maximize the chainsaw’s runtime.

The Way To Sharpen Petrol Chainsaws Manually Using A File

June 22nd, 2011 Filed under: Sharpener by arnasati

When you find yourself out and about in the forest chopping logs, the last thing you need is to have to go back to the house in order to sharpen ones saw chain. For this reason knowing how to sharpen your own chainsaw could be the remedy. Sharpening your own chainsaw manually, instead of sharpening it with a portable sharpener which operates from a 12V battery pack, will likely increase the life of the chainsaw..
Items You will require:
Chainsaw round files
1. Go to the neighborhood chainsaw store and remember to take chain along with you. You can then ask the clerk for a couple hand files which are the correct ones for your chain. The most typical sizing’s tend to be 1/4-inch and also 3/8-inch files. The file needs to be the right elevation and width to fit your saw’s teeth. The files are fairly reasonably priced, only a few pounds each, so it may be worth purchasing them in bulk if you undertake lots of timber cutting.
2. Observe that every 2nd tooth on the chain will be pointing the opposite direction to the one next to it. Consequently you are going to initially need to sharpen 1 set of teeth and then flip the saw around and sharpen the opposite set.
3. Place the chainsaw facing you with the chain on the saw. You will find it much easier to sharpen a chain whilst it is actually fitted on the saw.
4. Start off by using a gliding action forwards towards the tip of the file at a 7-degree upwards angle and sharpen in a single direction. It’s going to take 5 strokes for each tooth to get sharpened to the very same degree, while using the exact same quantity of strokes for each tooth. If you vary the amount of strokes on each tooth you may find that the saw pulls in one direction, which makes it more difficult to control.
Tips & Warnings
Keep the chain sharp for the best results. Place an edge on the saw teeth just about every 1 / 2 hour or so if needed.
At all times adhere to the safe practices instructions that are included with your saw.

Using Tractor Blades in the Garden

May 31st, 2011 Filed under: Gardening by arnasati

A Garden Tractor or lawn mower is a vehicle which is used to maintain your garden surface at an even length. They have a blade which rotates about its vertical axis to cut things and they are called as rotary mowers. The other rotating in horizontal axis is called as reel or cylinder mowers.
Cylinder type is usually using petrol or some other liquid fuels for their operation. Nowadays electric motors are becoming popular and they are increasingly used everywhere. For small lawns, cordless electric lawn mowers are present currently.

The manual push type is the simplest of others and they are using cylindrical blades for their function. The power is supplied by the worker who is pushing it with their hands and rotating the wheels. This action gears the cutting blades and then the mower works by rotating its cutting blades at faster rate. The blades then spins forward through the grasses by pulling them towards the blade against a plate which is fixed. The plate and blade fixed in tractor causes a scissor like cutting action and it leads to cutting the grasses.

There may be differences in type and height of grasses in different parts of garden at different seasons of every year. In those cases, the garden tractor should be adjusted to fit the height of grasses to cut them properly. In older or cheap versions, you have to do this adjusting work manually. But in recent versions, you can do it with the help of a switch itself which automatically adjust the wheels of tractor to a particular height.

You can not use the tractors in shaping your garden at its corner positions. In that case, you can use either hand-held mowers or edge trimmers to do that work. With the help of them, you can cut the grasses near trees, fences and the areas which are too small to move your tractor. In the tightest places, you can also use hand powered clippers for cutting them.

Electric Lawn Mowers help in preserving the environment as they do not emit any Carbon-di-oxide or Carbon Monoxide gases. If you would like to get one for yourselves, make sure you read our Cordless Electric Lawn Mower Reviews at cordlesselectriclawnmowerreviews.com and find the best Lawn Mowers for your needs.

Using Seeds To Grow The Japanese Maple Tree

May 24th, 2011 Filed under: Gardening by arnasati

Most Japanese Maple seeds ripen in the fall. Watch the tree and wait for the seeds to turn brown. The seeds are ready to be harvested when they are brown and can be easily removed from the tree.

The seeds are attached to a wing, it’s best to break the wing off before storing or planting the seeds. Japanese Maple seeds have a very hard outer coating as do many ornamental plants. Under natural conditions the seeds would have to be on the ground for almost two years before they would germinate. All that happens the first winter is the moisture softens the hard outer shell, and the second winter germination is beginning to take place.

In order for all of this to happen in the proper sequence so the seedlings actually sprout at a time of the year when freezing temperatures or hot summer sun doesn’t kill them, takes a tremendous amount of luck.

You can improve the odds by controlling some of these conditions, and shorten the cycle. Once you have picked the seeds and removed the wing just place them in a paper bag and store them in a cool dry place until you are ready for them. You don’t want to plant your seeds out in the spring until the danger of frost has past. Here in the north May 15th is a safe bet.

If May 15th is your target date you should count backwards on the calendar 100 days. That will take you to about February 5th if my math is correct. On or about the 100th day prior to your target planting date, take the seeds and place them in a Styrofoam cup or other container that will withstand some hot water. Draw warm to hot water from your kitchen faucet and pour it over the seeds. Most of the seeds will float, just leave them in the water overnight as the water cools down. 24 hours later most of the seeds will have settled to the bottom of the cup

Drain off the water. Place the seeds in a plastic bag with a mixture of sand and peat or other suitable growing mix. Even light potting soil will work. The peat or soil should be moist, but not soaking wet. Poke some holes in the bag so there is some air circulation, and place the bag in your refrigerator for a period of 100 days.

After 100 days you can plant the seeds outside. If you have timed it correctly, you should be at or close to your target planting date.

To plant the seeds just sow them on top of a bed of well drained topsoil or sterilized potting soil, and cover with approximately 3/8″ of soil. Water them thoroughly, but allow the soil to dry out completely before watering thoroughly again. If you water them frequently, not only do you stand a chance of the seeds rotting from being too wet, but you will also keep them cool, which will slow down the germination process.

Once they start to germinate provide about 50% shade to keep the sun from burning them. Snow fence suspended about 30″ above the bed will provide about 50% shade. Japanese Maples will tolerate some shade so it isn’t too important to transplant them too quickly. Depending on how close together they are, you might be able to leave them in the same bed for one or two growing seasons. Don’t transplant until they are completely dormant.
