Tips on How to Take Proper and Safety Care Of Electrical Appliances

Electrical Appliances will last longer if we take proper care of it.Here are some important tips to help you know how to take proper care of electrical appliances.

ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES DIFFER in their care and it is impossible to give specific instructions for each item and make. So if you have lost your instructions, it might be a good idea to write for a new booklet. Be sure to give the manufacturer or your dealer the model number of your appliance, which is usually stamped somewhere on it.

FUSES ARE SAFETY GADGETS designed to cut off electric power when there is trouble in a particular circuit. The little metal wall box containing them is usually somewhere in the basement. When an electric circuit is overloaded, a strip of soft metal melts in the fuse, thus interrupting the flow of electricity. Overloading a circuit with appliances, worn cords, and defective equipment will cause blown fuses. Check these possibilities and then unscrew the broken fuse and put in a new one. Fuses screw in just like an electric bulb and are very easily replaced, but make sure that the fuse you put in is of the same amperage. The number of amperes will be stamped on the screw end of the fuse. If the new fuse blows, or if you cannot locate the trouble, call an electrician immediately.

ELECTRIC LIGHT BULBS. Consideration of cords, plugs, and circuit loads is of course elementary. So are electric light bulbs, but are you really well informed about them? To begin with, their wattage should be suited to the task they are expected to perform and if you read or work with improper light you can expect aching eyes and glasses later. Any electric power company can supply you with information about this.

KEEP LIGHT FIXTURES CLEAN. You may be careful about using the proper bulbs in your lamps and wall lights and still not be getting adequate light. If lamp bulbs, shades, and reflecting bowls are dusty and soiled you are losing a great deal of the light you are paying for. Switch the lamp off and dust the bulbs, shades, and other parts when you dust your furniture. If the bulbs and bowls have accumulated a greasy, dust-catching film, take them off and wash them. Reflecting bowls and glass shades can be washed like other glassware. Bulbs and fluorescent tubes, however, should never be immersed in water. When they are cool, clean them with a damp soapy cloth and wipe them dry. Be sure your hands are dry when you replace them.

IF BULBS AND TUBES STILL LOOK DARK after they have been cleaned, they are about to go and are giving poor light. Screw in new ones.

DISPOSE OF OLD BULBS AND TUBES carefully. In fires, they produce minor explosions. Thrown out carelessly they can cause serious cuts, especially on children. And the materials used in some fluorescent tubes may be harmful when they are broken.

Overloading a circuit with appliances, worn cords, and defective equipment will cause blown fuses. Use the electric light bulbs which the wattage suited the the task they performed and make sure the keep the light fixtures clean to avoid the poor light.

Glass Pipes: Tips in Cleaning and Buying Glass Pipes

August 4th, 2011 Filed under: Glass by arnasati
dichroic glass
by Wendy Tanner

Glassblowing is a technique used to make glass by pumping air through a blow tube to make a bubble out of molten glass which can then be shaped into almost anything. There are two methods of glassblowing: free-blowing and mold-blowing. In free-blowing, short puffs of air are blown into the molten glass at the end of the blow tube to form different glass objects. In mold-blowing, molten glass is still blown at the end of the blow pipe but is placed in a wooden or metal mold to form tableware and other glass vessels.

A glass pipe is a hand-blown pipe made of glass most commonly used to smoke tobacco. Glass pipes are popular because unlike many other materials a glass container does not affect the flavor of the smoke. Also, the color of the pipe becomes more intense with frequent use creating beautiful, artistic pipes over time. Glass on glass pipes also do not heat up as much as metal pipes, making them safer and easier to hold.

Using a glass pipe also has its disadvantages. They are more expensive than pipes made of other materials such as metal. They are also easily breakable, and can be shattered into pieces when they are dropped. Hand pipes do not have replaceable parts, so you have to buy a new pipe if any part gets broken. Also, a pipe made of glass is harder to clean than a metal pipe because it can’t be disassembled.

Glass pipes can be cleaned by submerging them into a bowl filled with water. Place the bowl inside the microwave oven until the residue leaves the glass. Let it cool off and then drain. The pipe should look like new. For any residue left inside the pipe, either scrape it off or repeat the process. This will create a very bad smell during the process, so it is best to make sure the windows are open or even use the microwave outside if possible.

Another way to clean a glass pipe is to submerge it in rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover. The pipe will look like new. This is one of the most popular ways of cleaning pipes made of glass.

For thicker pipes or glass water pipes, the best way to clean them is to use a steam cleaner. Spray the steam cleaner on one end while catching the debris with paper towels on the other end. Steam cleaner should not be used for more than one minute at a time. Also, make sure to use it at the lowest setting.

When you buy a pipe, take time to find one that suits your tastes. Check out the available pipes before buying one. Buy a pipe that is easy to clean and easy to use. Choose a pipe that has an even airway. Blocked passageways will be difficult to use and will get wet. A hand pipe should be lightweight. It should not be varnished or have a sealed finish because this will crumble or bubble when used.

Essential Chainsaw Tips For Beginners

June 20th, 2011 Filed under: Sharpener by arnasati

You might think that a chainsaw is highly destructive tool. It can be, and is in many ways but conversely it is also a high precision instrument and must be considered and used as such. They need to be kept in perfect condition and checked before use every single time in order to be effective and safe for the user.

It is imperative that a chainsaw chain is kept in tiptop condition. The chain only really has two states – useless or perfect. A chain which is in perfect condition should cut through timber like a knife through butter. Normally it will require barely any downward pressure to cut through wood, but once it is in need of maintenance it will either require extra pressure or simply try and burn through the wood. You must keep the chain on your chainsaw in absolutely perfect condition. The condition of a chainsaw chain has no middle ground it is either absolutely perfect for the job at hand, or completely useless. Once the chain starts requiring more than a tiny amount of downward pressure to get through the wood it obviously needs sharpening. In perfect condition, the chainsaw should cut through timber just like a knife cuts through butter.

If the chainsaw chain needs maintenance it will start producing sawdust, instead of the large chips of wood that it will produce when it is fine. When cutting downwards, if chainsaw tries to veer off to the left or the right this is another sign that the chain needs attention.

The cutting tips of the chainsaw chain have a thin coating of chrome on the cutting edge. This chrome plate is the bit that does the actual work. As the chain gets worn down, it’s the chrome which is being worn away which is why the chain becomes less effective over time. To get the chain back to its best condition it needs to be filed. One of the most important factors of this operation is to ensure that the right sized file is used to match the chain being filed.

A roller guide is the name of the tool used to file the chainsaw chain in order to get it back to peak operating condition. It is possible to file the chain by hand but it’s unlikely that this will produce as good a result as using the roller guide. Quite often the chain will get worn down by hitting the ground during use or striking a hard object within the timber. When this is the case the chain must be filed down so that the new chrome edge is revealed. The chainsaw chain can be filed down many times as long as there is still 1 mm left on the heel of the cutter.

Although it can take some time and be quite a difficult job to sharpen a chainsaw chain, it is still a wise move to do so as once the chain is filed back to ideal condition it is as good as new. A chain sharpening kit shouldn’t cost any more than and the only other item required is a pair of protective gloves. The contents of a chain sharpening kit are a file gauge, a flat file, and the round chain file which must be the correct size for the chain. It is a good idea to have a small stiff brush as well. For example, an old toothbrush is ideal.

The rounded file is used to file down and sharpen the chainsaw chain. The flat file is used to file the depth gauge on each tooth of the chain. The file gauge is used for adjusting the top plate cutting angles of each tooth on the chain. The brush is used to brush away any pieces of debris on the chain before sharpening commences.

One problem which means that you need to replace the chain rather than sharpening it is if you find that the chain has been stretched. When heading to the store to buy your replacement chain if you’re not taking the chainsaw itself you should write down the make and model number and also if possible take the old chain with you. With these tips you should be able to get the most bang for your buck from your chainsaw chain.

Three Important Landscaping Tips To Protect Your Lawn Through Winter

June 14th, 2011 Filed under: Gardening by arnasati

Fall can be a wonderful time for enjoying your yard. All of your hard work throughout the summer leads to a thick, lush and beautiful lawn in the fall that is perfect for hanging out with the family. However, there are a few maintenance steps that you can take during the fall months to make sure your lawn is adequately prepared for the winter. Follow these three tips and you can count on a beautiful lawn returning after the snow begins to melt in the spring.

1. Fertilize Now to Help Protect Against Crabgrass -

It’s an unfortunate fact of life that crabgrass seeds will always be present in your soil. When spring arrives, these ugly, grassy weed seeds will be germinating in lawns all over your neighborhood. Your lawn service provider can make it harder for crabgrass to grow in your lawn with a pre-emergence treatment next spring. But to give your turf an even better head start in fighting off stubborn crabgrass, fall fertilization will make a huge difference.

Fall fertilization has many advantages. In the fall, top growth slows down in your lawn as your grass plants start focusing on building up their root systems and nutrient reserves. These reserves will be used for new growth when spring arrives. Providing your lawn with larger doses of fertilizer in the fall fits perfectly with nature’s normal cycle. Your lawn will make more efficient use of fertilizer in the cooler autumn weather than at any other time of year.

The three primary nutrients in fertilizer each serve a specific function. Nitrogen is used in large amounts to promote color and top growth. Phosphorus stimulates root development. And potassium helps grass plants to resist drought, disease, and retain water.

Fertilization during the fall season is crucial for turf growth, and a heavy application of a professional, slow-release fertilizer will provide your lawn with a wealth of benefits. When fertilized in the fall, your turf will be less susceptible to disease while exhibiting improved recovery from the stresses of summer heat and drought next year. In addition, fall fertilization will lead to earlier, richer greening in the spring.

And best of all, fall fertilization will lead to a thicker lawn.   A thick healthy lawn provides the best natural weed control by not allowing room for weed seeds to germinate and grow.

2. Aerate and Overseed Your Lawn this Fall –

The wear and tear of another hot summer left your lawn in need of a makeover? If so, schedule your lawn for fall core aeration.

Though it sounds like a complicated procedure, lawn aeration is really a very simple way to rejuvenate your turf. During the process, lawn care professionals will use an aerator to remove plugs of soil from your lawn. This will break up root-choking, compacted soil, creating pathways through which air, water and fertilizer can more easily travel to your turf ‘s roots. As a result, the roots will be able to grow stronger and deeper.

After the plugs are removed, they’ll be left on the surface to dissolve on your lawn during rainfall and watering. Eventually, they’ll mix with the thatch layer to help it decompose and break down. This will make it even easier for moisture, oxygen and nutrients to reach your turf ‘s roots, and will help to discourage harmful insects that tend to make their homes among thick thatch layers.

Overseeding is also encouraged after the aeration is complete.  The aeration opens the soil allowing the seeds to make contact with the soil and therefore increases their chances of germination.  The dissolved plugs also leave a fresh layer of soil on the surface creating an improved seed bed where the new seedlings have a better chance of staying moist and thriving.  As with any new seeding it is important to keep the lawn watered after an overseeding.

Overall, lawn aeration is one of the best things you can do for your lawn. The benefits of the process are many, and include:

- Improved turf / grass rooting
- Decomposition of harmful thatch
- Better penetration of moisture, oxygen and nutrients through the thatch layer
- Decreased water run-off for improved drought resistance
- Growth stimulation in old lawns
- Improved turf/ grass resilience

With fall lawn aeration, your lawn will be able to take advantage of good growing weather as it puts down deeper roots for the coming winter and spring seasons. Plus, core aeration can be made an even more powerful growth tool by combining it with over-seeding and fertilization.

It is important to note that aeration cannot be performed on all lawn types. Please contact your landscaping professional or lawn care specialist for more information.

3. Remove Leaves Before Winter  -

It’s great to have big shade trees in your yard. They add to the beauty of your lawn, which also adds to the value of your home. Unfortunately, come fall, you can start to resent them. Those big trees drop tons of leaves and that means extra work, hassle, and lost time.

It is important to remove leaves and debris from your lawn prior to winter as they will cause bare spots when spring arrives. In addition, removing the falling leaves from the lawn allows your lawn to absorb the winter sunlight. But how can you save yourself the hassle of constantly raking leaves?

A recent study done at Michigan State University shows that you can forget about raking, blowing, and bagging leaves. Instead, just mulch them with your lawn mower it’ll save you work, improve your soil, and add nutrients. Since you should be mowing your lawn in the fall anyway, this will save you time and effort that can be spent enjoying your yard.  Of course, if your lawn has many large trees causing a thick layer of leaves, some may need to be removed to ensure that the mulched leaves work their way down to the soil level.

5 Tips To Getting The Most Out Of Your Knife Sharpening System

June 5th, 2011 Filed under: Sharpener by arnasati

Gone are the days when a bench stone was only knife sharpening system available to sharpen the blade of your household knife or a professional tool. Now, we have a range of choices that includes Bench Grinder, Chain Saw Sharpeners, and Grinding Wheels, etc. As always, there are two ways to use these tools of knife sharpening business: a right way and a wrong way. The right way will help you get most out of your knife sharpening system and the use the wrong way might blunt the edge of your knives and tools, if not break it. And we obviously will talk about the right way here.

5 tips to get most out of a Knife Sharpening System Tip 1: get zircon alumina oxide based grinding wheel

Although aluminum oxide is the most common material used in a grinding wheel, I will suggest you to go for zircon alumina as it works best with steel and certain types of metal alloys. Grinding wheel that has zircon alumina in it will be durable.

Tip 2: Look at the grit size of the grinding wheel

Grit size is another thing you need to look at while deciding on a grinding wheel. A higher number in the context of grit size means finer grain and a lower number means coarser grain. Keep this in mind and this will decide the output of your knife sharpening system.

Tip 3: Ensure steadiness of bench grinder wheel for better accuracy

A bench grinder is cheaper sharpening equipment that can be used to sharpen kitchen knives, drill bits, hand tools, and cutters, etc. The wheel which is used in this sharpening equipment comes of different sizes. You not only need to find the right wheel size for the bench grinder tool you will use for your sharpening system, but you will also need to use a tool rest to provide steadiness to the wheel. This has significant impact on sharpening accuracy.

Tip 4: Choose automatic chain sharper over manual one

This is no-brainer, but still I thought to mention it here. Automatic chain sharpener will discount the human error from the equation. When using an automatic chain sharpener, you will not require caring for the proper placement of the sharper tooth, or care for pulling the head promptly up.

Tip 5: Go with a professional knife sharpener

Well, at the first glance this tip may look out of the league. But just one closer look will tell you how wrong your presumption was, particularly when you need to sharpen your professional tools. All knife sharpening systems work great, but only when handled by a qualified person. Let go of your DIY (Do it yourself) attitude, it will hurt your business, and hire a pro to do this job. There are quite a few available.

Don’t pinch pennies if you can save dollars in price of your professional tools by hiring someone who is into knife sharpening business for many years.
