Standard Tests for Carpet Tiles

June 19th, 2010 Filed under: Furniture by arnasati

Specifying flooring for commercial application requires at least an understanding of how it passes to perform in the workplace. Unfortunately, the quality labels such as “contract” or “heavy domestic” are open to interpretation, so it is difficult for the specifier to make an informed decision.
Simon Lawrence of carpet tile in the United Kingdom specialist floor office, offers an overview of standard tests, which met on the mat – and can be changed asked – in a commercial environment punished.
Premise severe performance requirements on any type of flooring. When coffee became widespread in the house there is a flood wiping immediately with a spray stain remover. In the workplace, it is more likely to be ignored, and then the dress shoes unwiped. Your couch at home is moved, if you must remove any dust or Dinky Toys from the bottom. Castor chair in your office travel miles, drill holes in tile, how to proceed.
This means that we need a criterion by which we can assess the relevance of the carpet or carpet tiles for commercial real estate sector. Fortunately, there are standardized tests are available € Norm (EN) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) certified. Genuine heavy contract should be found the above standards.
ISO 8543 – Weight of pile force
The carpet tiles should be close, very close to each cell, to provide the necessary wear resistance. A standard for this, ISO 8543 specifies a method for shaving the carpet on the back. Simply measure the distance from the cluster mass in grams per square meter. In general, the higher the mass of the cluster, the more difficult the carpet tile will be sustainable.
ISO 1765 – Total thickness
This is another test relatively simple. In this case, the tile is compressed by a standard weight, then its thickness is measured to the nearest 1mm 0th.
IN 1963 – treadmill test Lisson
This test measures the resistance to abrasion carpet, particularly the strength are the tufts of hair guaranteed. The treadmill is placed in front of the mat, tested and back and forth on the sample 400 times. The wheel turns a little faster than him on the carpet, creating a solid moves abrasive effect. The carpet sample is tested with the master sample compared and evaluated accordingly. This is a particularly aggressive test, some types of carpet tiles literally in tatters. A Pass EN1963 is a strong indicator of resistance to wear.
ISO 10361 – accelerated wear tests
This standard is particularly relevant for carpet tiles that are used in an office. It is composed of two tests Vetterman drum test and the wheel chair.
Vetterman drum test
The drum test Vetterman is intended to simulate heavy footsteps concentrated. Foot traffic tends to be concentrated doors or narrow passages between tables, and these areas can quickly wear.
The carpet for testing is mounted in a rotating metal drum. A heavy ball drop (5kg seventh) in projections rubber is placed inside the drum and can navigate freely. The carpet is on two test programs, a subject of 5000 revolutions of the drum and a 22,000 rpm.
The carpet is then visually assessed against the champions to take samples and a score for how they withstood the impact of the audit.
Visual inspection of the carpet to give results 1-5 for the 5000 and 22,000 rpm and the end result is a combination of two results from the formula below;
Total score = 0. 75 x result after 5,000 rotations + 0 25 x result after 22,000 revolutions
A score of 2 or more is a pass
A result of the second 4 or more is a pass for the intensive use
wheel chair
chairs with casters are particularly harmful, and they wear ragged holes in the floor can be a stumbling block. The results of this test should be an essential part of the office carpet specifications.
The chassis rolls on a chair three wheels, with a weight of 90kg on the carpet. Two samples are used, a barrel for 5000 and for 25,000 cycles.
The samples are visually assessed against standard samples and an evaluation based on a scale of 1-5. The final result of the test, according to the formula given below;
Total score = 0. 75 x result after 5,000 rotations + 0 25 x result after 25,000 revolutions
ISO / DIS 10965 – the electrical resistance
This test is particularly important to object area, which could be good, even in computer rooms, where damage could build a structure of static valuable equipment.
The carpet sample to be tested should be acclimated for at least seven days before the test at a temperature of 23 + / -1 ° C and 25 + / -2% relative humidity. This is because the impact as much moisture on the conductivity of textiles and must be strictly controlled to obtain a significant test.
In this testing regime, vertical and horizontal resistance of the resistance pad is measured (in Ohms).
Horizontal resistance: An insulation pad under the carpet tile sample stack up should be placed. Two electrodes in the tile 200 mm and the resistance is measured in ohms connected.
Contact resistance: Here the electrodes above and below the tile and the resistance is measured in ohms between them.
Measures less than 1010 ohms is needed for computer rooms.
ISO 3415 – static loading (compression test)
This test was designed to see how the carpet was laid by a weight on the pad. It reproduces the effect of furniture on the rug.
The thickness is measured before compression
A pressure of 220 kPa applied for 15, 30 and 60 minutes.
The result is simply the loss of thickness in mm after
a payback period of one hour.
ISO 140-8 acoustic properties
The equipment for this standard consists of two chambers, one above the other, five hammers, each 500 grams, the first test to measure the impact absorption – how the sounds of impact is absorbed by the carpet sample.
In particular, the hammers are falling on the floor of the upper chamber to a height of 4 cm, each admitted to striking the ground 10 times per second. The sound is recorded in decibels in the next field.
The test is then repeated with the addition of the sample carpet on the floor of the upper space.
The difference in decibels is the level of noise impact, which was absorbed by the carpet sample. This test is interesting because it shows how carpet leading to transmission of sound compared to other floor coverings such as wood or vinyl to stop.
For ISO 354 the absorption of ambient noise is measured. Noise of different frequencies (125 to 250 – 500 – 1000 to 2000) are recovered in an area of 200m ³ and the amount of noise distribution measured from the bottom. So the sound is reflected by the ground when they are covered from the samples. A score of 0 5 In this trial showed that 50% of the noise is reflected to be absorbed by the sample and the remaining 50% was to express through them.
ISO 2551 – Dimensional stability and EN 986 for tiles
The carpet tiles have dimensions ± 0 02% after the following treatments:
Heating to a temperature of 60 ° C for 2 hours
Bathing in water at a temperature of 20 ° C for 2 hours
Further heating to a temperature of 60 ° C for 24 hours
Air conditioning in normal atmospheric conditions for 48 hours
These treatments show that the tiles are in their integrity under the worst conditions, such as cleaning the hot water and extreme temperatures to keep.
Cost of Ownership
All floors have a hidden cost in terms of replacement costs. In offices that the cost is raised by the disruption of installing new carpet tiles. To purchase is unwise inevitably lead to higher costs. A reliable supplier should positively to a request for test data. Hopefully the information contained in this article will help develop the test specifications and support an informed choice.
