Leaded Eyewear Protects X-Ray Technicians Eyes from Radiation

X-ray technicians may potentially be exposed to high levels of radiation from the x-ray emitters with which they work. To protect themselves from harm, technicians should wear leaded eyewear and other equipment, such as aprons. The purpose of wearing protective equipment is to block the technician from exposure to high levels of radiation. Chronic exposure to radiation has been found to cause a number of health ailments, including eye cataracts and several cancers. In addition, short-term exposure to radiation can cause symptoms of radiation poisoning to occur; these symptoms include nausea, hair loss, and weakness. Wearing lead protective gear such as leaded eyewear protects x-ray technicians from dangerous levels of radiation by shielding them from incident radiation from their machines. This is because heavy metals, such as lead, absorb and scatter radiation, thus preventing it from entering the wearer’s body.

Radiation glasses are not just glasses made out of lead. Instead, they are made with lead embedded in the glass of the eyewear material. Although pure lead is poisonous, radiation glasses made with lead are safe because the lead is fused into the actual materials of the eyewear. Technicians typically do not need to worry about being exposed to lead from their protective gear, because they are designed in such a way that the lead is kept separate from the wearer. However, if contact does occur, it is advisable for users should wash their hands after touching any leaded material.

Radiation glasses can be made to any prescription strength by eyeglass labs and special manufacturers. This means that eyeglass wearers can replace their ordinary glasses with leaded eyewear while working. Prescription radiation glasses protect their users from radiation while enabling them to see normally, which can be very valuable to people who do not want to or cannot wear contacts at work.

Another aspect of leaded eyewear to check for is whether or not they have side shields. Side shields work like any normal safety glasses, by protecting the wearer from radiation which comes in from the side. The shields are commonly made of plastic or glass.

It is very important to protect eyes from radiation. Since x-ray technicians are likely to be exposed to higher than ordinary levels of radiation, it is recommended that they wear protective eyewear while working. Protective materials such as protective glasses reduce the wearer’s exposure to radiation on the long term and short term. Ultimately, reducing radiation exposure as much as possible is the best course of action for technicians to avoid radiation-related disorders such as radiation induced cataracts. Because eyes are particularly vulnerable to radiation, it is vital that users protect them from radiation as much as possible.

From Ordinary to Stunning ? Tiffany Glass, Part2

In continuing our study of Tiffany Glass and the various techniques that Mr. Tiffany used in his creations of his famous Tiffany Lamps, let us look into other methods that he used.

In order to create the illusion of foliage a process known as Fracture Glass was used.  It would create thin, irregular shaped, wafers of glass that was affixed to the surface of the glass.   Large bubbles were made in the molten glass by forcefully blowing into a long blowpipe creating large thin bubbles that stretched the glass.  The bubbles would cool, harden and then quickly be smashed and broken into small pieces of shard.  These small, irregular pieces of glass would then be pressed into the glass during the rolling process and become permanently fused.

In addition to this process, Mr. Tiffany would combine the process of Fracture Glass and Streamer Glass, as previously discussed in part 1, in order to create the combination of streamers and thin glass wafers.  This would give the illusion of foliage, grass, and branches as seen from a distance.  Both streamers and fracture glass was added to the glass during the rolling process and became a permanent part of the glass.

Ring mottle glass was a process created by Mr. Tiffany in the early 20th century.  Ring mottle glass is characterized by irregular arrangements of patches of color.  It is created by localized heat treated opacification and crystal growth patterns.  Tiffany’s style exploited glass and all its characteristics in order to create and design without using paint or other elements in his designs.  Ring mottle glass was used so extensively that he relied little on painted details.

Last, but not least, is Drapery Glass.  This type of glass Mr., Tiffany used in creating his large ecclesiastical stained glass windows.  He used this method numerous times to give the effect of flowing robes or angel wings.  The process was done to hot molten glass by using a small diameter hand held roller that is manipulated forcefully over a sheet of glass to produce heavy ripples.  At the same time as the ripples were created the entire sheet of glass was folded and creased.  The making of drapery glass involved skill and experience.  As the glass cools, the ripples harden and become a permanent part of the texture of the glass.  Each time this process was used it created a unique piece of glass, never another like it.

As we can see from the study of the designs of glass that Tiffany used, from the opalescent glass, to Favrile, to streamer and fracture glass, ripple and ring mottle glass, each technique produced a certain look and feel that Mr. Tiffany was trying to create in his lamps, and stained glass windows.  As varied as nature is in color, design and beauty Mr. Tiffany tried to recreate in glass.  His attention to detail and precision in duplicating textures and colors laid the groundwork for the must stunning pieces of glass artwork ever manufactured.

When choosing a Tiffany Lamp be sure to take your time and analyze the fixture you are interested in and try to capture the feel and effect of the lamp.  Mr. Tiffany and the “Tiffany Girls” were truly master artisans and created works of stained glass as brilliant as nature herself.  Using and combining several different methods of working the glass made his creations come to life and will undoubtedly add character and beauty to your home.

From Ordinary to Stunning – Tiffany Glass, Part 1

Louis Comfort Tiffany, 1848-1933, was the originator and designer of the stunning Tiffany Stained Glass Lamps.  His lamps were characteristic of vibrant colors, textures and original designs.  His designs can be categorized into seven basic designs, each with its own distinctive qualities.  However, within each category, Mr. Tiffany used several different methods of making, treating, and designing the glass.  Each Tiffany Lamp is unique, one of a kind, and hand crafted. To truly appreciate each design and each lamp, it is interesting to delve into the various glass making methods that give each Tiffany its own unique and distinctive qualities.

The first type of Tiffany Glass to investigate is Opalescent Glass.  This type of glass is very interesting and derives its name from a characteristic that means there is more than one color present within the glass itself.  The two colors are fused together during the manufacturing process where two colors may be laminated or a technique of turning red glass to orange or blue glass to green is done by superficially adding a solution of silver nitrate to silver stained glass.  This type of glass was used during the 1860′s to 1870′s in various England Stained Glass Studios and others.  Opalescent glass became the foundation for all the other glassed designed by Tiffany.

The next and most famous type of glass used by Tiffany is Favrile.  He patented the glass in 1880.  Its name comes from the French word, febrile, which means handcrafted.  Favrile is very versatile and you will find it in a lot of Classical art work.  Favrile’s main characteristic is that the glass possesses a superficial iridescence.  It causes the glass to shine and shimmer, but at the same time, the glass retains is opaque qualities.  This shimmering effect of the glass was made by combining two different colors of glass while it was still hot.

Mr. Tiffany was quoted, “”Favrile glass is distinguished by brilliant or deeply toned colors, usually iridescent like the wings of certain American butterflies, the necks of pigeons and peacocks, the wing covers of various beetles.”

To create different types of textures to the glass Tiffany used several other methods that would give the glass the look and feel of the nature that the designs were patterned after.

To make the impressions of waves, water, or veins in leaves Mr. Tiffany used the process known as Ripple Glass.  This process is quite interesting in that the process was done by rolling a roller over hot molten glass.  To make glass smooth the process would require that the roller spin on itself and go forward at the same speed.  In order to give the ripple effect the roller would spin faster than the speed that it was traveling forward.  When the glass cooled the ripples would remain as part of the glass.

Another technique that Mr. Tiffany used to give the illusion of branches, sticks, and grasses was called Streamer Glass.  Streamers of hot glass were swung back and forth across using a long steal pipe, know as a punty.  These long, hot, thin strands of glass then harden and become attached to the glass.  They are then pressed into the glass and became permanently fused.

When investigating and considering Tiffany Lamps for yourself or as a gift, take the time to truly look at the details of the glass.  Noticing different nuances and characteristics in the glass can be the difference between ordinary or exceptional.  It can also mean the difference between authentic or imitation.  Although original Tiffany Lamps are found in museums or private collections, there are some manufacturers of Tiffany Style Lamps in production today still use hand crafted and hand soldered glass made famous by Mr. Tiffany.

The Rocket(Excerpts From Reminiscences by Rsn)

THE ROCKET No sooner did we settle after the Holi incident saving us from the danger which we had just bypassed by taking advantage of the probability, Harpal one day came up with another idea; “How about firing a cracker in the girls hostel?” “What ?Are you mad? We have just come out of such a risky incident . Moreover Diwali is far off” I replied. “I was only a spectator till now but I want to perform some action as you did ”said Harpal feeling left out. “No I am not into this so please count me out as everyday is not a Sunday” I tried to avoid my presence in the new prank. “No you just be my moral support I’ll manage the rest” he said again. “No but I will not enter the girls hostel now in any case” I made it clear as crystal to him. “Ok ! Agreed. We’ll do it remotely” “How are you going to do?” I asked him to make sure I am out of trouble. “First you say yes” he pleaded. “What would be my role and the where do you intend taking me to? I’ll not leave the hostel premises.” I clarified. “You will be with me and be a watch out man as I cannot trust anyone else since this requires secrecy to be maintained.” he said. Fearing his conditions I was trying to explore the maximum out of him so that he does not involve me in any trouble after taking a commitment from me. I hesitantly agreed to him being his close friend. “Ok but do not involve me directly”. “Thanks,” he said with his naughty eyes. “Now tell me about your plan.”I asked him with curiosity. “We will place a rocket on the terrace pointing it towards the girls hostel and light it which will zoom to their balcony and blast. Simple” Harpal briefed. “Are you a kid? Do you think it’s that simple? Will nobody come to know that you have placed a rocket and lighted it with a match stick. The appearance of flame of fire and the smoke emanating out of it cannot remain hidden as a result we will be noticed by someone while going up to the terrace or returning from there. We will not have adequate time for doing this.” I said criticising his plan. “You leave that to me as I’ll be able to manage that. You just have a look around the area while I am placing it in position and signal me all clear. That’s all. The rocket will not go off immediately since I have applied some brain.” Harpal said confidently “What?” I asked with curiosity.

“At least have some faith in me” he reiterated and requested me not to ask any more questions as he is of the opinion that if he speaks out his plan it may fail; a superstitious belief he believed in. I kept quiet after that and smiled at him. The very next day he brought some crackers with a long Rocket nicely packed in a brown sheet which nobody could make out what it was. After lunch when there was no disturbance he locked the tower bolt of the door of our room and unpacked it in front of me laying it on his bed. He then took out an incense stick from a packet already kept in his box and tied it to the wick of the rocket with a thread well revved. Keeping a match box in his pocket he got up and said, ”I am ready let’s go now as everyone is resting ” I followed him. He inserted the rocket into his sleeve of the shirt to make it invisible to the observer. We climbed the upper floor and then finally reached the terrace. As we approached the parapet wall of the terrace which faced the girls hostel he asked me to have a round of the terrace and see from all the angles if anyone is approaching. I quietly went and had a round of the complete periphery. There was hardly anyone as the students were in a relaxing mood. Some music systems were switched on at low voice while some were gossiping sitting in their rooms in the lower floor. After having a round I came back to him who was leaning on to the parapet and looking below towards the Dhaba and the girls hostel. We both gossiped for a while and after about 5 minutes got the control of the situation as to make ourselves fully aware of the various activities going on around that place. “Now is the time for action. You stand near the door to the staircase and indicate me with raised hand if anyone approaches the terrace after hearing the footsteps” instructed Harpal with a serious look as against his ever smiling face to which I was used to at looking most of the time. I saw him pulling the Rocket out of his shirt sleeve slowly which he placed on the wall facing it towards the girls hostel. He oriented the wick part towards him. There was hardly one girl was sitting outside on an easy chair reading a book with the door of their room to the balcony open. He then took out the matchbox and asked me to go and stand near the staircase door of the mumty. I went and indicated all clear. CHHHHHHHHHHHHHHZZZZZZZZZ ! I heard him light the matchstick in his cupped hands and he lit the incense stick tied to the wick of the rocket. As soon as it was lit he quietly moved in a casual manner looking at all the sides and joined me. “Come let’s go” he said and placed his left hand on my shoulder indicating me to get down from the stairs. “Should we hurry up?”I asked him. “No not at all” he said smiling and switched on to a different topic discussing about the Moment of Inertia while getting down stairs. I was worried that any moment the rocket may go off but it did not. We safely crossed the seciond floor where the juniors lived and while on the way to our room he shook hands with two more of our friends who crossed us. We entered the first floor and reached our room. After getting inside he again smiled while I looked at him. “Now you watch the fun precisely after 5 minutes” he said while opening the window partially. We had locked the door from inside and were lying on our beds upside down with our hands placed one above the other with folded arms over which we rested our chins. We gazed the girls hostel through the partially opened window waiting for some action to take place. “It must have switched off,” I said to Harpal. “Not a chance! It is good quality incense stick” he replied with confidence. While we were busy discussing about it after about 5 minutes I could hear a loud hissing sound with a trail of fireballs approaching towards the girls hostel right from our hostel terrace as if some aircraft was about to land. Soon I realised that it was the Rocket which must have got ignited and it headed straight at the target. ZHHHHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSHHHHHHH! It went just over the girl who was reading the book in the balcony who out of reflex action dived down while the Rocket went inside the room and disappeared. After about two seconds there was a large sound of explosion BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM! Out came the girls screaming as I could see Amrita and one more girl running out in the Balcony while two more rushed out towards the Warden’s room. “Oh my God!” I only prayed that no one should get hurt. “Don’t worry nothing will happen to them they are just screaming out of their habit” replied Harpal. It was a real fun watching them react to our stumuli. The incense stick fixed to the rocket acted as a safety fuse giving a time delay of 10 minutes during which we easily came down and also gossiped with some of our friends on our way back leaving no scope of anyone doubting us for the act. The eyes of suspicion must have been activated immediately searching for the pranksters after the rocket was fired during which we were inside our bed watching the fun through the peephole. The teachers from the girls hostel also came out to know what has happened and soon it was inferred that some boy had fired a cracker in the girls hostel. But the million dollar question was Who? The girl sitting outside in the balcony must have explained to the warden that she saw a Rocket approaching her from the boys hostel and so all the eyes were on the terrace to trace out who the person was but at the time it was ignited there was no one hence the evidence was missing. It was obvious that the person on the top floor would have done this easily due to his nearness to the terrace so the needle of suspicion went on the first year students staying on the upper floor just below the terrace. The warden immediately came out of the Girls hostel building with his eyes raging with fire and still towards the terrace to watch for any student movement there and called for the ‘fall in’ of all of them. There was lot of noise and I could see all the first termers standing in three lines on the ground facing the warden where he addressed them. “Coming straight to the point One of you had fired a rocket in the girls hostel. Kindly own up immediately as I will pardon him with less punishment or else all of you will have to vacate the hostel within 24 hours” he said in a harsh voice. Everyone looked at each other as did not know who the culprit was. They kept quiet and on repeated insistence by the warden one of them said , “Sir no one actually has seen who did it so why punish all of us” “Shut up “ he roared back. I told Harpal “Yaar we have unnecessarily put them in trouble this is not fair we must help them out” “Hey don’t utter a word about it nor discuss anything on this matter. Nothing will happen to them as the warden is just trying to install fear in the refreshers to force the culprit to own up. Do you think he can get the hostel vacated for such a petty thing and that also when the culprit is not known. Have these peanuts and go to sleep for the time being” he said handing over some peanuts to me while raising the volume of the songs in the background coming from the radio and went to sleep. How could I sleep in such a tension while the warden carried on with his lecture addressing the students on the ground which I could hear clearly from the partially opened window inspite of the high volume of the songs being played as we were just on the first floor. The warden finally dispersed them on the condition that the name of the culprit must be handed over to him in next 24 hours or else severe action will be taken against them. I could see all the girls in their balcony watching the event as if were watching some match going on in the stadium. As everyone dispersed I could hear Harpal snoring by now. I kept thinking that I have not done anything wrong directly and the person who had done it is least bothered and snoring to glory so why should I be tense. I had the handful of peanuts and gulping a glass of water over it also slid in my blanket to have sweet dreams. In t
he evening while in the dining room there was only one discussion going on, Who was the person who did this and what will happen if he is not traced out by tomorrow? I only kept quiet showing no interest in it and observed what Harpal was discussing with others. “You people have become very mischievous” he said to a refresher asking him what and how it had happened. “I do not know sir but I am worried where would I get a room to live if the culprit is not found out as we have been told to vacate the hostel if his name is not handed over to the warden by tomorrow.” replied the first termer terrified. “Oh my God ! Don’t worry we should wait for some time till the warden cools down. If you are unable to find out go and apologise collectively to him I think he would listen to you as he is a very kind hearted person” Harpal convinced him with assurance.. “Thank you sir for your advice I think we have to adopt this technique only” the refresher nodded in agreement to him. “But leave no stone unturned to find out the culprit as he must be punished.” added Harpal further taking the junior student further into his confidence. “No sir we will not leave him” saying this he went to collect rice from the table. I only smiled looking at my face in the steel thali I was holding with salad put in on the side of it. As thought of by Harpal things went our way. The warden cooled off after the first day. No culprit was found and the first termers went and apologised to him who pardoned them being their first mistake. The chowkidaars were made vigilant and were asked to keep a watch over the terrace on the activities of students for the next few days but could not detect anything except noticing the sikh students drying their hair in sun on Sundays.

The Beauty of Jewelry Made from Dichroic Glass

July 14th, 2011 Filed under: Glass by arnasati
dichroic glass
by Wendy Tanner

NASA is the original inventor of dichroic glass. They produced it for use in space suits and later used by various industries such as optical enterprises (dichroic lenses are used by various camcorders), scientific measuring instruments (especially those using lasers for measurement), and others.

The art community soon discovered dichroic glass and its use by glass artists began to grow. Part of its popularity comes from the amazing sheen or patina of fused glass, combined with the luminous depth and range of colors that can be created as well as the various textures that can be produced.

How to Make Fused Glass:

Creating dichroic glass is a demanding, rigorously defined process involving vacuum chambers, electron guns and various oxides such as titanium, magnesium and silicon that are bonded to hot glass using a technology known as thin-film physics.

The glass is first cut into the planned pieces (e.g.

a pendant, earrings, beads and so on). They are then placed in a vacuum chamber with the appropriate oxides. Pressure within the chamber is increased and so that both oxide and glass get heated. Once the hot glass is ready, an electron gun is used to vaporize the oxides which then bond to the glass.

Once this is accomplished (the process of vaporizing oxides being repeated if needed), air is allowed back into the chamber to cool it down, and the glass pieces are removed, cleaned and prepared for fashioning into ‘wearable glass art’ or jewelry.

Making Jewelry and other Accessories from Fused Dichroic Glass:

Turning fused glass into jewelry is another process in itself which relies heavily on the creativity of the artist or designer. The raw dichroic glass can be polished or shaped using abrasive tools, or wrapped in silver or other metal threads or the ‘hardware’ which makes the piece wearable. The dichroic glass piece can even be returned to the kiln for further reworking in a process called ‘fire-polishing.’

The findings – or the metal sections needed to turn the glass pieces into wearable jewelry – have to work with the dichroic glass piece or pieces to combine beauty, elegance, durability, and hypoallergenic qualities so that safe, comfortable use of the finished dichroic glass jewelry can be assured. Gold, silver and anodized niobium are some of the materials preferred by artists as findings for their pieces.

The growing popularity of dichroic glass for fashion accessories and other uses (as home décor, for example) have led many people into the field – either as makers of fused glass which are then sold ‘unfinished’ (in a sense) for others to turn into jewelry or other accessories. Others have used their background in jewelry design and manufacture to combine fused glass and precious or semi-precious stones to create bracelets, earrings, pendants and other wearable pieces that combine the rainbow colors of dichroic glass with the brilliance of mined stones.

How To Make Sure You Get Maximum Life From Your Chainsaw With Proper Chain Care

July 2nd, 2011 Filed under: Sharpener by arnasati

Article by Dean Caporella

If you are a regular chainsaw user then maintenance is a vital component in keeping your machine in good working order. That’s an understatement if ever I’ve heard one however, it’s surprising how a regular maintenance schedule is often overlooked.

The chainsaw chain is one aspect of your machine you need to keep a close check on. It’s just about the “lifeblood” of any saw and whether you are a professional or a semi professional, keeping it in top working order will not only help prolong the life of your chainsaw but cut down the risk of accidents significantly.

Chainsaw Chain Maintenance

There is nothing worse than a dull chain. It’s frustrating but simple, regular checks can reduce this frustration. Try these maintenance tips:

1. You’ll recognize the “dullness factor” by the lack of bite and sawdust-like chips which are being produced. You’ll also be exerting more pressure on the chainsaw to cut into the wood.

2. If using your chainsaw regularly then you should be checking the chain daily.

3. You need to sharpen your chain when it becomes dull. Safety is of utmost importance when sharpening so consult your manual. Experienced users will know to use a well lit area and to make sure tension is correct so it doesn’t move around. Make sure to wear heavy duty gloves.

4. Use the correct file size as specified for your particular type of chain. It’s important to remember to take your chainsaw to a professional after you’ve sharpened it several times yourself just to make sure you’ve maintained consistent filing angles.

5. Check lubrication on a regular basis. This can be as often as refueling your chainsaw.

6. While the chain requires regular checks, making sure the other components of your chainsaw are in good working order is just as vital. The engine, fuel system, pull chord and air filter should all be maintained in good working order.

More Chain Care Tips

There are some standard do’s and don’ts with chainsaw chain care. Try these on for size and see if they are familiar.

- Hitting materials such as rocks when cutting. This is a sure-fire way to quickly diminish the effectiveness without regular maintenance.

- Making regular tension checks and ensuring the chain is lubricated.

- Forcing a dull chain to cut. You should never force the issue. It’s dangerous and can can cause damage to your machine.

A chainsaw is the most dangerous power tool on the planet however, in it’s own way, it’s a delicate piece of machinery which can be easily damaged without proper care and maintenance. You’ve spent your hard-earned in buying a chainsaw, now it’s up to you to get the longest life possible from it.
