Other things that may influence the price include the current condition of the area and any preparatory work that is needed. An installer should be able to give you an estimate. A good installer will be able to lay around 400 square feet per day.

Interlocking stones are a great choice for paving your driveway. They offer lots of advantages compared to other materials. If you want your driveway to look great, for a long time, you should give them a try.

Acrylic Aquariums Work Great for Fish Lovers and for Home Decor

Article by Gary Speer

Showing off your prize fish? Or just looking for something new in beautiful home decor? Acrylic aquariums are the best buy for your money. Here are at least three good reasons to buy one of the newer “high-tech” acrylic aquariums:

1. Acrylic aquariums are much lighter weight than traditional glass aquariums. When you install one, or when you find yourself having to move one, the weight of a fully loaded aquarium may be more than you thought. Taking a 20 gallon aquarium as an example, a glass aquarium weights about 35 pounds. An acrylic aquarium the same size weighs about 17 pounds. When you add the weight of the water, the 20 gallon glass aquarium comes in around 225 pounds. The acrylic aquarium, then, would save several significant pounds in total weight. In addition, if you’re buying your aquarium via the Internet or as a catalog order, shipping costs are reduced significantly. Not only is the aquarium lighter to ship, it requires less packing and extra shipping charges which most supplies add to insure the more breakable glass models.

2. Acrylic aquariums, besides being lighter than glass, are virtually unbreakable and leak-proof. A quality acrylic aquarium is fused together by heat and molecular bonding. There are no degradable joints or seams, making it virtually leak-proof and unbreakable. Most glass aquariums are warranted against leakage and breakage for 1 to 6 years at most. Acrylic aquariums generally carry lifetime warrantees. In addition, the acrylics have improved in recent years so that they start out clearer or brighter than glass aquariums, and maintain their clarity and are unlikely to “yellow” with age. Although acrylic scratches more easily than glass, aquarium manufacturers sell cheap (about ) scratch removal kits. Careful cleaning with soft cloths eliminate the scratching problem from the start.

3. Acrylic aquariums offer aesthetic benefits for fish lovers and home decor. They come with safe, rounded corners and no sharp edges. They come in a full range of sizes to fit your current aquarium stand or allow you to customize your home decor by purchasing the combination of aquarium shape, size, and stand you want. And from a practical, safety standpoint, acrylics are also more flexible than glass, giving them a distinct “bend and not break” advantage around children, non-fish pets, and even natural disasters such as earthquakes and hurricanes! They also are generally better insulated than glass aquariums, making them require less energy to maintain necessary water temperatures for the health and well-being of your fish.

Acrylic aquariums offer important advantages over glass, whether you already have an aquarium, or you’re just getting started. To beautify your home or just for showing off your fish, you should buy an acrylic aquarium when you make your next aquarium purchase.

Leaded Eyewear Protects X-Ray Technicians Eyes from Radiation

Article by Jeremy Smith

X-ray technicians may potentially be exposed to high levels of radiation from the x-ray emitters with which they work. To protect themselves from harm, technicians should wear leaded eyewear and other equipment, such as aprons. The purpose of wearing protective equipment is to block the technician from exposure to high levels of radiation. Chronic exposure to radiation has been found to cause a number of health ailments, including eye cataracts and several cancers. In addition, short-term exposure to radiation can cause symptoms of radiation poisoning to occur; these symptoms include nausea, hair loss, and weakness. Wearing lead protective gear such as leaded eyewear protects x-ray technicians from dangerous levels of radiation by shielding them from incident radiation from their machines. This is because heavy metals, such as lead, absorb and scatter radiation, thus preventing it from entering the wearer’s body.

Radiation glasses are not just glasses made out of lead. Instead, they are made with lead embedded in the glass of the eyewear material. Although pure lead is poisonous, radiation glasses made with lead are safe because the lead is fused into the actual materials of the eyewear. Technicians typically do not need to worry about being exposed to lead from their protective gear, because they are designed in such a way that the lead is kept separate from the wearer. However, if contact does occur, it is advisable for users should wash their hands after touching any leaded material.

Radiation glasses can be made to any prescription strength by eyeglass labs and special manufacturers. This means that eyeglass wearers can replace their ordinary glasses with leaded eyewear while working. Prescription radiation glasses protect their users from radiation while enabling them to see normally, which can be very valuable to people who do not want to or cannot wear contacts at work.

Another aspect of leaded eyewear to check for is whether or not they have side shields. Side shields work like any normal safety glasses, by protecting the wearer from radiation which comes in from the side. The shields are commonly made of plastic or glass.

It is very important to protect eyes from radiation. Since x-ray technicians are likely to be exposed to higher than ordinary levels of radiation, it is recommended that they wear protective eyewear while working. Protective materials such as protective glasses reduce the wearer’s exposure to radiation on the long term and short term. Ultimately, reducing radiation exposure as much as possible is the best course of action for technicians to avoid radiation-related disorders such as radiation induced cataracts. Because eyes are particularly vulnerable to radiation, it is vital that users protect them from radiation as much as possible.

Industrial Glass Varieties

September 10th, 2011 Filed under: Glass by arnasati

The substance of glass typically evokes thoughts of windows, figurines, or other types of art.  But the aesthetic value of glass is just one of its qualities.  Glass actually possesses a number of features that make it ideal for various aspects of manufacturing and industry.  These industrial glasses actually come in different varieties, each specially created to offer a certain skill for a given job.  Here is a look at some of these types and how they function in the industrial world.

Network glass is known for its lack of silicates which makes it rare amongst its peer.  Its structure and lack of silicon allows it to conduct electricity.  Due to its high level of conductivity, network glass is most commonly found in fiber optic structures.  These flexible structures can transmit light and information far quicker and more efficiently than traditional copper wire.

Glass can also be created in the form of electrolytes.  These ionic mixtures are super-cooled into structures of crystal glass.  The actual chemistry is rather complicated, but the applications are of electrolytes is quite wide.  A more common application of glass electrolytes comes in the form of rechargeable batteries.  The ions present in the glass allow it to conduct electricity and actually store a certain amount of voltage.

The most interesting form of glass may occur when in the aqueous state.  This glass is actually almost liquefied.  Also known as sodium silicate, this substance is used in various cements, fire protection, and serves a number of roles for industrial purposes.  Its ability to exist as a liquid but quickly become a solid gives it a number of interesting applications, including the ability to repair metals, serve as a sealant, and quickly encompass dangerous materials or even fire.

One of the most modern forms of glass that is newly emerging is the glassy metal.  Glassy metal is produced through rapid cooling.  This glass can be sized to any surface area and as thing as the aluminum foil that can be purchased from the local grocery store.  However, compared to that aluminum foil, the glass is much more resilient.  In fact, it actually is able to withstand a great deal of force and tearing.  The expense of this type of glass leaves its widespread commercial application still in question, but it appears to serve as a long term replacement for various types of film, wires, and plastic parts (due to its ability to be molded).

With such a broad and modern selection of types, states, and applications, it is clearly time to expand the colloquial definition of glass.

A drinking cup and window pane are sufficient examples of glass only in how a Chihuahua would be a sufficient example of a dog.  As humanity travels deeper into the twenty-first century, glass is only going to grow into more roles as we continue to find ways to change its structures, chemical compounds, and applying it in ways never before discovered.  The aforementioned types are far from a complete list of glass types, which would far more room than I have here to describe.  Nonetheless, hopefully this serves as a good example of how versatile and useful the substance is.

Graves and memorials mark the remembrance of your loved ones. Gravestones, headstones or tombstones are memorial markers made of stones and placed over or next to graves at the site of burial in a cemetery. They are simple upright slabs carved out of stone with semi-circular, rounded or arched shaped tops. This is mainly done for marking identification on the grave of the person resting in peace in the same cemetery where there are other graves as well. War memorial are monuments made to mark the celebration of victory and commemorate those who died or injured in the war.

Special emblems indicated on tombstones have several themes. Some of the most common ones are Angel of grief (resembling sorrow); Birds (the soul); Book (faith, wisdom); Cherub (divine wisdom); Column (noble life); Conch shell (wisdom); Cross, anchor and Bible (trails, victory and reward); Crown (reward and glory); Dolphin (salvation, bearer of souls to heaven); Garland (victory over death); Evergreen (eternal life); Gourds (deliverance from grief); Dove (purity, love and holy spirit); Hands (a relation); Anchor (steadfast hope); Heart (devotion); Horseshoe (protection against evil); Hourglass (time and its swift flight); Ivy (faithfulness, memory and undying friendship); Lamb (innocence); Lily (purity and resurrection); Lamp (immortality); Laurel (victory, fame); Lion (strength, resurrection); Mermaid (dualism of Christ); Oak (strength); Olive branch (forgiveness and peace); Palms (martyrdom); Peacock (eternal life); Pillow (eternal sleep); Rooster (awakening and courage); Shell (birth and resurrection); Poppy (Eternal sleep); Star of David (the God); Skeleton (life cut short); Tree trunk (the beauty of life); Snake in a Circle (everlasting life in heaven); Crossed swords (life lost in battle); Broken sword (life cut short); Torch (Eternal life if upturned); Triangle (truth, equality and trinity) and Weeping willow (mourning and grief). Monumental masons usually create, repair and install the headstones. Many types of stones are used for making tombstone or headstones. The most commonly used are:

• Granite: Granite is a hard stone and requires good level of skill and expertise for carving. The carving is generally done by hand, but, modern methods of using computer- controlled rotary bits and sandblasting has made the carving work easy.

• Marble or limestone: Marble or limestone is meant to be the best for carving. Skilled sculptors use percussion tools like mallets, axes, toothed hammers and adzes for hitting. For rough shaping of stone and block size needed for carving, pitching and wedge tools are used. Tools such as lettering chisels, points and claw chisels are used for chiseling the figures and symbols.

• Fieldstones: They are considered to be the earliest markers for graves. Natural fieldstones are made with carving of a symbol and the name and age of the rested person.

• Sandstone: Sandstone is a sedimentary rock and consist quartz and feldspar sand sized minerals or rock grains. It is a semi hard stone and can not break under normal circumstances, until and unless being dropped. Waterproofing is done on sandstone to enhance its surface resistant against water and protect it from dampness, fungus and algae.

• Slate: Slate is a textured stone, but slightly porous. It is mainly used for letter carving and often highlighted with white paint.
